You’ll NEVER guess what happened in the woods last week…

Published: April 30, 2018

Last week we noticed something strange going on in the woods behind Richard House. There was a group of people hanging about. But who were they? What were they doing? And why were they carrying spades?!

Armed with an iPhone we decided to follow them as they made their way through the woods. This is what we saw…

The story of our new lagoon began…

…when a group of graduates from Hiscox visited the hospice for a gardening day. They spent time working alongside our dedicated volunteer gardener Derek, who shared his idea for a new beach themed area to be hidden within our woodland.

The Hiscox team set their sights on becoming #RichardHouseHeroes and fundraised an incredible sum to fund the creation of the lagoon and bring smiles and enjoyment to our families and children.

Since then the development of the lagoon has been in full swing, with further corporate teams offering their support.

The Corporate Compliance team from Barclays got on board…

…to start the work and lay the foundations for the area. They did a fantastic job weeding, shovelling and levelling the lagoon space to ensure it was ready for the next stage of laying the “water” and “sand”.

In came the next team, Navigant Consulting…

…who helped with the final preparations and matting down the area. They then created a wheelbarrow relay from the supply shed to the lagoon, loading in blue and sandy coloured rubber chipping to transform the space into an oasis complete with decorative island!

A very big thank you…

to both Barclays and Navigant for their hard work in making the lagoon a reality. Thank you to all volunteers, your support has made all the difference. One volunteer summed it up:

‘It was an absolute pleasure to complete the beach area for the hospice which I hope will be enjoyed by many who visit Richard House.’

We are overwhelmed by the support of Hiscox and the graduates who showed such enthusiasm and commitment to funding the project, thank you so much. The lagoon is a new and exciting experience for our children to enjoy with their siblings and friends, bringing the feel of a day at the seaside to our families here within our hospice.
