Shortage of Volunteers at Richard House Charity Shop in Hornchurch

Richard House Children’s Hospice charity shop in Hornchurch faces partly closing due to lack of volunteers

The Richard House shop in Hornchurch is one of the hospice’s busiest charity shops and they are very grateful for the support of local people who donate goods and shop with us.  However recently the shop has had to close for part of the day due to lack of volunteer staff.

Louise Hamilton who looks after the shops for the charity said: “We have a small team of dedicated volunteers like Phil who work really hard and will do extra shifts to help out, but we desperately need more volunteers who can help provide customer service or help our shop manager Denise sort and prepare donations to sell in the shop.

She continued: “Having to close for part of the day so existing staff can have a lunch break for example,  means we take less money and are able to support fewer local families who may need the specialist care that Richard House offers.  That is heart breaking for all of us.  Volunteering only takes a few hours a week and if just five people who read this article come forward to help that would make such a difference.”

Volunteers play a key role in the life of Richard House. Local man Phil Woodbridge who previously worked in IT for HSBC for 30 years, and has volunteered at the Hornchurch shop for the past four years said: “For anyone who hasn’t volunteered before I would say try it. It is so rewarding and you get real pleasure out of knowing you are doing something useful and giving back to your local community.

He Continued: “I love meeting the people who come in as well as great folks who work here too.”

All in an effort to support families our services range from specialised residential clinical care, to art, music and dance therapy, giving the child the opportunity to explore what is happening to them in a safe environment, to sessions enabling a child with sensory needs to communicate through sound, to end of life care with pre and post bereavement support for all the family.
