Richard House at the London Marathon: 26 runners, 26 miles, 26 April!

Published: February 9, 2015

Two and a half months of solid training is all that is left between the 26 runners taking on the London Marathon for us on 26 April. Every one has their own story to tell and we will be finding our more about them in the build up to the big day. We start with our volunteer gardener Derek…

Evergreen retiree and committed volunteer at Richard House Derek James, will be 72 by the time of the marathon and is a long-term supporter of the hospice. For the past seven years the Silvertown resident has volunteered at Richard House as head gardener of our award-winning garden beautiful grounds.

As well as his tireless work in the gardens, the sprightly pensioner has also raised £4,500 running the London Marathon for the past two years for Richard House, and his seventh London Marathon will be his third consecutive marathon in support of the hospice.

Derek, a retired history teacher, only took up running in his late thirties, and ran his first marathon thirty years ago. Last year, Derek’s time of 4 hrs 3mins 35sec put him 15th in the over 70s category and this year, he is looking make the top 10!

Derek says: “I’m proud to volunteer at Richard House, it’s a good cause, and I know they need to raise so much from donations to keep helping children and families.”

“I want to do it in under four hours and make the top 10 for my age category. I also want to win the over 70s category by the time I am 79!”
