Who can volunteer?
Anyone can volunteer. At Richard House, we welcome volunteers from all walks of life, with different skills, experience and interests.
What skills and experience do I need?
It depends on the role, but many of our volunteer roles do not require you to have specific experience or skills. Richard House will provide you with support and training to enable you to feel comfortable in your role.
Is there an age limit for being a volunteer?
There is no upper age limit on volunteering, but there is a minimum age, depending on where you volunteer.
The minimum age for volunteers in our charity shops is 16-years-old and 18-years-old for hospice volunteering.
Are the any other restrictions to volunteering?
If you are visiting the UK on a tourist visa, unfortunately you cannot volunteer. This is due to the restrictions on your visa.
Is there a minimum amount of time I must give?
Different volunteer roles at Richard House require different time commitments. Some volunteers come here on a regular basis, whereas others prefer to help out with events which might happen less regularly.
If you have some time to give, we would love to hear from you, however, please keep in mind that unfortunately, due to the administration time involved in the recruitment process, we cannot process volunteer applications for hospice specific work for less than 6 months.
Can I claim expenses?
Volunteers are able to claim expenses for lunch and reasonable travel, to ensure they are not out of pocket. If using an Oyster card you should print out your recent travel and highlight the relevant journey.
What do I have to do to become a hospice volunteer?
The first step is to complete an application form and return this to the hospice. Hospice volunteers are required to attend an interview, undertake a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check, and provide details for two referees. Hospice volunteers are also required to attend Policies and Procedures training.
What do I have to do to become a charity shop volunteer?
If you are interested in volunteering at a Richard House retail store, please complete an application form and return this to your nearest shop. If you would like to become till trained, we will need to obtain two satisfactory references. Find your nearest Richard House shop.
I am receiving welfare benefits – am I allowed to volunteer?
Yes, but tell your Job Centre or Benefits Office before volunteering to get their confirmation.
