Who can volunteer?
Anyone can be a Richard House Hero – we welcome people from all walks of life, with different skills, experience and interests.
What skills and experience do I need?
It depends on the role, but many of our opportunities do not require you to have specific experience or skills. Richard House will provide you with support and training to enable you to feel comfortable in your role.
Is there an age limit for being a Richard House Hero?
There is no upper age limit, but there is a minimum age, depending on where you are based.
The minimum age for our charity shops is 16-years-old and 18-years-old for the hospice.
Are the any other restrictions?
If you are visiting the UK on a tourist visa, unfortunately you cannot volunteer. This is due to the restrictions on your visa.
Is there a minimum amount of time I must give?
Different roles at Richard House require different time commitments. Some Richard House Heroes come here on a regular basis, whereas others prefer to help out with events which might happen less frequently.
If you have some time to give, we would love to hear from you, however, please keep in mind that unfortunately, due to the administration time involved in the recruitment process, we cannot process applications for hospice specific work for less than 6 months.
Can I claim expenses?
You are able to claim expenses for lunch and reasonable travel, to ensure they are not out of pocket. If using an Oyster card you should print out your recent travel and highlight the relevant journey.
What do I have to do to become a Richard House Hero at the hospice?
The first step is to complete an application form and return this to the hospice. You will be required to attend an interview, undertake a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check, and provide details for two referees. You will also be required to attend Policies and Procedures training.
What do I have to do to become a Richard House Hero at a charity shop?
If you are interested in volunteering at a Richard House retail store, please complete an application form and return this to your nearest shop. If you would like to become till trained, we will need to obtain two satisfactory references. Find your nearest Richard House shop.
I am receiving welfare benefits – am I allowed to volunteer?
Yes, but tell your Job Centre or Benefits Office before volunteering to get their confirmation.
